On a related topic…

This fall, Lower Lab, the Coalition for the Homeless and WPIX/Channel 11 will once again collaborate on Project: Back to School, an urgent initiative to help New York City’s homeless children start the school year off on the right foot.  In collaboration with public and private schools, backpack and school supply drives will be held across the city in an effort to provide homeless children with the back to school supplies they desperately need.

I write to you today to request your participation in this year’s Project: Back to School, by donating school supply items or backpacks to New York’s most vulnerable children.

More than 16,000 children living in New York City will sleep in emergency shelters tonight.  Many are forced to start the school year unprepared, lacking the necessary school supplies and support they need to succeed academically.  Homelessness, and the inherent lack of stability, takes a tremendous toll on children, forcing many to fall behind academically and socially.  More than half of homeless children suffer from depression, anxiety, and other social disorders.

By participating in this drive, our school will make a tangible difference in the life of a homeless boy or girl.  Project: Back to School aims to better prepare homeless children for the school year, and ensures that their basic academic needs are met.  As you shop for their children, they will have an opportunity to help another child start their year on a positive note, by simply picking up a few extra supplies.

Join our efforts as we collect backpacks and school supplies, which will be distributed to children in shelters throughout the city and through the Coalition’s numerous direct service programs.

Thank you for helping to give New York City’s homeless children a chance to succeed.  I hope you join us in making this year’s Project: Back to School a great success!
Should you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at any time. Items may be dropped off beginning the first day of school through September 22nd .

please find supply options and info on our home page.

Imagine being a Super Hero… a Fairy Princess… a Rock Star… a Wizard. What will YOU be this summer? When you read books, you can go anywhere your imagination will take you.

By participating in the summer Read-A-Thon, you also get rewarded for your reading! By reading at least 5 books and keeping a list of those books, participating students will:
  • Have their name placed on our READ-A-THON TREE
  • Receive a GOLD MEDAL in our awards ceremony
  • Have a chance to win a BARNES AND NOBLE GIFT CERTIFICATE
Students may also collect pledges from family and friends for their reading. Last year, Lower Lab Students read over 2000 books, and raised over $13,000 for our school!

Placement of Upper Grade Students to Gifted & Talented Programs
Important Changes

For students currently enrolled in a NYC public school: Due to the late administration dates of the 2010 New York State English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics tests, student test scores will not be available in time to determine placements in June or July.  We therefore anticipate offering placements to fill the few available seats in upper grades G&T programs in late August or early September.

Once parents have access to their child’s ELA and Math test scores (via ARIS Parent Link https://arisparentlink.org/parentlink) and the 2010 scores reflect a Level 4 in both ELA and Math, an application may be submitted for a possible placement to a G&T program (entering grade 4 in September 2010 for K-5 schools or; entering grades 4 & 5 in a K-8 school).

Parents must make sure they have their ARIS Parent Link username/PW from their child’s school before the end of the school year.

Applications will be made available at this website in August.

For students in a NYC Charter School: Interested parents should contact their school to access their child’s test scores.

For students not currently enrolled in a NYC public school: Parents may complete an application (once they are made available) and submit the completed application along with documentation of comparable standardized test scores in ELA and Math to the Office of Student Enrollment, Attention: Upper Grade G&T Application, 52 Chambers Street, Room 415, New York, NY 10007.

Lets stay healthy!

The Department of Education has developed guides for each grade, K-8, entitled "Great Expectations, Partnering for your child's future," describing what children should know by the end of each school year. The guides lay out in parent-friendly language the major elements of what children are learning--particularly in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, which are the focus of these guides. The guides are available in nine languages (English, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Arabic, Urdu, Bengali, Korean and Haitian Creole). Families can obtain copies of these guides from the parent coordinator at their child's school. Copies can also be obtained by clicking below, under the particular language and grade.
